Windows Defender is annoying, demanding on hard disk and you should be able to turn it off!

(Uninstalling it, would be better but lets not make this discussion right now...)

Use Regedit to change the registry key and DWORD value below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender

DisableAntiSpyware DWORD

0 = On - This means it runs...
1 = Off - This means it will not run...

For those who are familiar and have access to gpedit.msc, use gpedit instead. (gpedit is the local policy editor, but it's only available on entreprize and pro editions)

Download REG key to turn it OFF from here.

Btw when an antivirus is installed the above flag is not considered, if an anti-virus is present and active, defender will not run (real-time).
