This is part 3 from a series

part 1 - What apps to install on a clean installation (Windows 7+)

part 2 - What apps to install on a clean installation (Windows 7+) part 2

First we need to get us a nice skin for VLC.

One of the less known but rather nice and clean skins is made by onehalfkiller and can be downloaded from here .

The download button is on your right column.

Open a File Explorer and write on the address field %ProgramFiles(x86)%\VideoLAN\VLC\skins and press enter.

Then extract the downloaded content in this path.

Now open VLC, and press Ctrl+P, to go to options (or from the menu Tools/Options)

Select "Use Custom Skin" and then click on choose. Inside the skins folder you will find the new extracted folder and within it the vlt file.

(hint: use the adress path)

Now click on "SAVE" and close VLC. When you reopen it, it will use the new skin and its nice and minimal and looks like this.

Just a reminder VLC also comes with a host of possible addons.

This is the resident music player and will turn into our music server for other devices in our home.

Go to http://www.foobar2000.org/components and download, UPnP/DLNA Renderer, Server, Control Point .

When the file is about to download it will ask you to run with foobar directly. Click OK.

The foobar2k will ask to confirm that you initiated this request. Click Yes...

Then the click apply and the DLNA server will be initiated, so you need to allow to exit the firewall. On the following popup, Allow Access.

If you want to shutdown the DLNA server, you can stop the server through the menu Library/Stop UPnP Media Server

Apart from the usual things, you can use this server to...

- Stream audio to a PS3, XBOX360 (using their interface), iPhone (PlugPlayer)
- Push audio from either your local foobar2000 Media Library or another UPnP Media Server to WMP12, an iPhone (PlugPlayer) or another foobar2000 instance on the network.
- Control foobar2000 playback from an iPhone, WMP12, or any other Control Point.
- Control a Linn Ds product including making playlists, switching sources, etc.

Now lets add a nice visualization option, go to http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_vis_shpeck and download this addon as well.

Unzip the contents (dll file) to %ProgramFiles(x86)%\foobar2000\components

Download this 7z file from here. And extract it in the foobar2k folder. %ProgramFiles(x86)%\foobar2000

Now close foobar2k and reopen it, go to Library/Preferences - Visualisations and lets find the path to where we saved the winamp directory.

Once done it will look like the pic below.

click OK. Then go again back to Library/Preferences and open Keyboard Shortcuts. Add a New shortcut, find the "Start Milkdrop..." function under main / visualizations, set a key to your liking (I chose M) and click OK.

Now when you play some music by pressing M you open the visualisation window, double click to make it fullscreen.

More to come shortly...
