You just bought a new pc, or decided you had enough and just a made a clean install... wouldn't it be nice to get a list of all the apps you should install, the things you should tweak to make them better and a few tricks up your sleeve to make life easier ?

The following list of applications are what I deem as best choice. There are many excellent applications and some ingenious software developers but this is not a list of best applications just a list of what I think would be an awesome windows installation.

The application list is applicable only for windows 7 and above (windows 8.1, windows 10)

Frameworks:

.NET 4.6

JAVA 8

System Utilities:

Auslogics Defrag Free - One of the Best disk defragmenters around. After using ccleaner to unclatter your system, use Auslogics defrag to properly defrag your files. please note Auslogic installer might some times contain an option to install some other useful utility (NOT MALWARE) feel free to decline or accept according to your needs.

IMPORTANT: SSD drives DO NOT require any type of defragmenting, quite the opposite, you will render them useless if you defrag an SSD drive.

CCleaner - General cleaner for browsers, windows updates & cache, registry and many other specific apps.

TeraCopy - This changes the copy function in windows with one that is much better (and MUCH faster). Avoid it if you want to use it in a highly policied (domain/group policy) environment, because it might collide with powershell scripts run by sys admins.

Notepad++ - Notepad alternative, very usefull for programming, handling of all type of ascii files and can be extended by addons. If you do any type of scripting this is one powerful application.

Compression:

Peazip - Note: This includes 7zip functionality and 7zip binaries as well among a host of other encryption/compression stuff.

Media:

CCCP - Codec Pack with many uses (The main components of Combined Community Codec Pack are the LAV Filters, the Haali Media Splitter, the xy-VSFilter, and Media Player Classic Home Cinema.)

VLC - General Player (plays almost everything in exceptional quality and relative resources), very good option for broadcasting to other devices.

foobar2000 - Best lightweight music player, can be expanded by a multitude of addons.

If you generally use subtitles, you might want to try BS.Player FREE that has an option to automatically download subtitles for whatever is playing.

Documents:

If you can't have office 2013+, a very good alternative is OpenOffice.

OpenOffice

FoxitPDF Reader (Best PDF Reader in my opinion - great integration with Firefox and Chrome). If you are a latex user Sumatra PDF is recommended (supports better integration)

PDFCreator (This is the most powerfull tool for creating PDF and Image files of your documents, also works as a virtual print server)

IMPORTANT: PDF Creator, provides options during installation to install other software, you just decline and go on with installation.

Browser:

FireFox - Best browser in my opinion. Chrome is a powerful option as well.

Anti-Virus:

AVAST FREE - I use the paid edition because it is worth it, but the free edition is lightweight and powerful enough to cover most needs.

Malwarebytes - An exceptional anti malware software. Another option is Ad-Aware.

Torrent Client:

Deluge - Simple, well featured, a good option for private trackers among other things.

Remote assistance:

Teamviewer - Another option is Ammy if you don't like teamviewer but the featureset may be a bit lacking in some cases.

Other:

Steam - One does have to play some games once in a while. Do not install on default location, within program files, create a separate folder if you intend to use mods on your games. (Windows security policies unless explicitly defined will create issues with mods that create local files)

Skype - Although slightly turned to bloatware by MS, it still is one of the best communication/VOIP applications around. Another easy to use alternative is Hangouts by google. Hangouts is an extension of Chrome browser.

BitTorrentSync - Create your own dropbox like service between your pcs and it runs smoothly in the background. You share one or many folders between your pcs or some third person through a single link. Comes with many options and features.

VirtualBox - General-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware, targeted at server, desktop and embedded use.

You can use Ninite to install most of these silently and in mass. Ninite is a powerful installer, updater that I use professionaly to mass install programs and roll out updates. The completely free edition will do the installation on its own without any hassles and protect you from any type of bloatware, malware or shit software.

Now that you installed the software, we need to set it up, so that it runs smoothly.

Instructions follow on part II .
